Carry your coaching staff into next season

Appoint the coaches you’re keeping to next season’s squads, move them to a different age group where they’re stepping up, and end the seats of the ones you’re letting go.

A head or assistant coach's seat belongs to one season's squad, so it doesn't move across by itself when the next season starts. Programme-wide roles do: you, goalkeeper coaches, video analysts, physios and strength and conditioning staff keep your appointments.

Who returns is decided earlier, in the Retention column of Coaches. Reading that column and the rest of the staff table is covered in Manage and develop your coaching staff.

Before you start

  • Mark every head and assistant coach Retain, Release or TBC in the Retention column on this season's Coaches list.
  • Set up next season's squads first. A coach can only be appointed to a squad that exists, and if 2027's squads aren't set up yet, Coaches says so and links to Modules. See Build your squads.

Carry your staff into next season

Coaches has a Season control above the list. Choose 2027 to see next season's coaches in the same list, with the same columns (there's no Retention column, because nobody is deciding about 2028 yet). Once this season has finished, Coaches opens on 2027 by itself, and whichever season you last chose is remembered. If 2027's squads aren't set up yet, the card below says so and links to Modules.

Above the list, a Coaches from 2026 card holds this season's head and assistant coaches you haven't appointed for 2027 yet. Its top line counts what's left, such as 2 to decide · 2 ready to appoint. Once every coach from 2026 is appointed or released, the card goes away and the page is just the 2027 list. A programme in its first season has nobody to bring forward, so it has no card.

Each coach on the card has their Retention pill. That pill is the only decision on the row: Retain means they're appointed when you press the button, and TBC holds them there until you decide. Under their name is the 2027 squad they're going to. To put a coach in a different squad, tap Move and choose it; a coach whose age group has no 2027 squad shows the squad chooser straight away. To fill a seat nobody is returning to, use Add coach at the top of the page.

Coaches you marked Release, and anyone whose staff record has been made inactive, sit under Not retaining at the bottom. An inactive coach is labelled Deactivated and is never appointed.

Last season’s coaches still to appoint, above the 2027 list. The Retention pill is the only decision on a row: Retain is appointed, TBC waits for you. Nothing is sent when you appoint, and the card goes once nobody is left.

The button at the bottom counts the Retain coaches with a squad to go to, as Appoint 2 coaches for 2027 does. The confirm lists each coach with the squad they're going to. Nothing is sent: they see their 2027 squad in the coach app straight away, and keep this season's squad until you end it. An appointed coach leaves the card and joins the 2027 list, where you open them like any other coach to see their profile or add their contract. If one can't be appointed, their row stays on the card with the reason, such as a working with children check that blocks a junior squad.

Once your programme has moved to 2027, any 2026 coach you haven't brought forward yet is on the same card at the top of Coaches, titled Still to bring forward from 2026, so nobody is missed. That holds even when your programme moves ahead of the rest of the club, for example while another programme is still finishing its 2026 competition.

A candidate you've made an offer to on the coach hiring board is listed in the 2027 list too, marked Candidate with Offer made under Access. Tap them to open their card on the hiring board, where Sign to staff makes them a coach. Candidates at earlier stages stay on the hiring board.

End the released seats

Once the season has ended, Coaches lists the coaches you marked Release who still hold a seat, with End seats. The confirm names them: they lose access to those squads in the coach app, and their records for the season stay. No seat ends at the season change without this step, and a coach marked TBC is never included.

Confirm it worked

  • The Coaches from 2026 card (or Still to bring forward from 2026) has gone, because every coach is appointed or released.
  • Every 2027 squad has its head coach in the 2027 list. A seat nobody returned to is either filled with Add coach or on the coach hiring board.
  • The coaches you released no longer hold a seat on this season's squads.
