Change or end a senior deal
Re-sign a player by carrying their deal forward, end a contract with any pay after it settled, and keep the squad’s history accurate when players leave or come back.
A deal ends in one of three ways: it runs out, it is replaced, or it is terminated. Clubhouse keeps a separate record of each, and picking the right one keeps the squad's history true. Record a replacement as a departure and a player who is still training with you lands in Released & departed. Remove a player who genuinely left and they disappear from the roster's history altogether. This page is about choosing the option that matches what actually happened.
- To re-sign, set up next season first. The carried-forward deal is written onto next season's roster, so that roster has to exist (Run your First Grade roster).
- Have the paperwork to hand. A signed variation or termination letter belongs in the contract's paperwork section, filed against the deal it changes.
- Re-signing juniors in bulk is a different job: see Run your retention round.
Once a player holds a signed deal and nothing is drafted after it, their profile shows a next deal card. For Ben Carmody it reads Ben's next deal: Nothing is drafted for after 30 Sep 2026. If the deal has already run out, the card reads Put Ben back under contract instead.
The card offers four ways forward. Three are the usual ways to write a deal. The fourth is made for this moment:
Carry the current deal forward starts from the terms and payments already agreed. It asks one question first, Which competitions does the new deal cover?, and lists the club's competitions for you to tick. Nothing is ticked for you, because last season's answer isn't necessarily this one's. Ben's terms and payments come across as they are, dated to the competitions you pick.
The form then opens as Re-sign for 2027, with everything rolled on a season. A Re-signing note at the top says which deal is being carried, and the payments say Carried forward from last season, with the dates rolled on. Saved with the contract — last season’s schedule is left untouched. Change whatever moved in the negotiation, then press Re-sign. The new deal is saved as a draft on next season's roster, ready to send for signing.
A few things worth knowing:
- It always writes next season's league deal. Start it from the Australian Championship roster and it still writes the league deal, with the Championship offered as a competition to tick.
- With no next season, it tells you which one to create. For example: Set up the 2027 season before carrying a deal forward.
- A deal that already runs past next season can't be carried. Their current deal runs past the season you are re-signing them into. Add the contract manually and set the term.
- On a roster that uses a points system, re-signing adds a season to the player's loyalty record, and the form warns you that it changes their points. Check the budget after saving.
Open the deal from Contract history on the player's profile. A signed deal opens as a read-only summary, and Edit contract lets you correct the record, such as a date entered wrongly or a bonus agreed later. File the signed variation in the paperwork section with File as set to Variation, so the paper and the record agree.
Two cases can't be edited:
- A deal out for signature is locked (Locked while the contract is out for signature.). Use
Void & revise…on it, as described on the signing page. - A terminated deal is final.
When the terms change enough to be a new deal, terminate this one as a replacement (below) and write the new one.
Open the deal from Contract history. The red Terminate contract card is at the bottom, and Terminate… opens the form. It isn't offered while the deal is out for signature. Void the request first.
Set the Termination date and, if it will help later, a Reason (optional). Then the form asks the question that decides everything else, here What’s happening with Callum?
- Callum is leaving the squad: Moves Callum to Released & departed. The contract history stays on record. This is a genuine departure.
- We’re replacing this contract: Callum stays in the squad. Send the new deal as usual — it takes this one’s place. This is the renegotiation.
Confirm termination stays greyed out until you choose one, because only you know which it is.
For a departure, Weekly pay after termination (optional) handles a settlement. Leave blank if pay stops. Enter a full or reduced weekly amount to keep paying from the termination date to season end. A mutual termination on half pay is just that one figure, and the budget forecast includes it. The field disappears on a replacement, because paying the old deal beside the new one would count the same player twice.
The form reminds you to upload the termination document. File it in the paperwork section with File as set to Termination, before or after you confirm.
For a replacement, write the new deal from Callum's profile and send it as usual. When he signs, it takes the old deal's place on his row.
Move off the roster, at the bottom of a player's profile, records that someone has left the squad. Open it, set the Effective date, then choose Release or Terminate. Both move the player into Released & departed and keep them in the roster's history. Use release when a deal ran its course or you parted by agreement, and terminate when it was cut short.
Both act as soon as you tap, with no second question. They change the roster only: a signed contract stays signed. To end the contract itself, and settle any pay after it, use Terminate contract on the deal instead.
A player still only planned for the squad also gets Added by mistake? with Remove from this roster. Removing deletes this entry outright — no departure, no date, nothing left in the roster history. It is meant for someone added to the wrong season. Because it can't be undone, it asks first (Keep on roster or Remove). If the player genuinely left, release them instead so the record stays.
Open a departed player and the Left the squad card says what happened, for example Ben was released on 30 Sep 2026. If that was a mistake, or the contract was ended so a new one could be issued, Return to squad brings him back. Clubhouse then confirms Ben is back in the squad. Send the new offer whenever you’re ready.
He returns listed if a signed contract is still attached, and planned otherwise. Terminating and then returning is the normal way to reissue a deal mid-season. If he has already been added again through Add player, the return is refused and points you to the newer entry, so you never end up with the same player twice in one squad.
Contract history on the player's profile holds every deal they have had: type, term, weekly rate and where it stands. That is Draft, Offered, Awaiting signature, Signed, Terminated or Expired. Old deals stay listed, and replaced paperwork stays in the paperwork section marked Superseded. When something looks wrong months later, this is where the story is.
- Everyone in Released & departed has an effective date, and nobody who simply changed contracts is in there.
- A termination with a settlement shows the ongoing pay in the budget forecast. A replacement shows the new deal and no ongoing pay.
- Each re-signed player has a draft or offer on next season's roster, and on a points-system roster you've checked the points total again.
- Every deal that changed has its signed variation or termination letter in the paperwork section.
