Quick answer
How do I make my own formation?
If none of the presets is quite how your team lines up, make your own shape. You can do it wherever you choose a formation: the formation button under a match or squad pitch, and the formation rows of a play in the session planner.
Open the formations and tap New shape (under Mine in the formation list). The editor opens on the shape currently on the pitch, so you only move the players who differ.
- Drag a player to a new spot, or tap a player and then tap where they go. Tapping a spot that already has a player swaps the two.
- Tap a picked-up player again to change their role, for example a wide midfielder into a winger. Clubhouse names each position from where it stands, so most of the time you won't need to.
- The goalkeeper stays in goal.
- The numbers at the top (such as 3-2-3) count the players on each line as you go. While the shape still matches a preset, they show the preset's name. If you move players into a different preset, Clubhouse offers that preset instead of a copy.
- Type a nickname next to the numbers if you like ("High press"). That's how the shape reads in the list: 3-2-3 · High press. If there is already a shape with the same numbers, a nickname is needed so the two can be told apart, and the line under the numbers says so.
Press Save formation and the new shape is chosen on the pitch straight away. Shapes you make are yours: only you see them in the list.
Tip: On a phone, press and hold a player for a moment before dragging, so the page doesn't scroll instead.
When you draw a play, its formation is in two places: the Formation button under the pitch, once your side is on, and the Formation row of the Players menu. Both offer New shape, and the same ⋮ on your own shapes.
In the planner, New shape starts from where your players stand on the pitch right now, each moved to the nearest spot on the editor's grid. So you can arrange your side by hand for a phase or a set piece and keep it as a formation. When you save, the play moves into the new shape, and the shape is in your formations everywhere else in Clubhouse at the same match format.
Your technical director or a club admin can publish a shape to the club, either as they save it or later from its menu (the ⋮ on its tile). A published shape appears under Club for every coach at your club, at the same match format. A shape is published by whoever made it, so if you'd like one of yours shared, show it to your technical director and they can make it and publish it.
Use the ⋮ on a shape's tile:
- Edit shape saves a new version. Boards and lineups that used the old version keep it, so changing a shape never moves players on a lineup somebody else has already set.
- Rename changes the nickname only.
- Archive takes the shape out of the list. Anywhere it is already in use keeps showing it.
During a match the formation list is for switching only: making, editing and archiving shapes is available before kick off and away from the live match.
For every preset and what it asks of players, see What formations are available and how do I change them?
